Random Thoughts

I have been too lazy to write in my journal lately. Actually, the holidays and family have taken precedence.
I have started a new hobby, HO Gauge model trains. I have a large table set up, and a nice layout with several turnouts, etc. It is relaxing to concentrate on something like this, rather than fretting about business, of which there is none.
We will have a new president in a few days. I would never have voted for Obama, but it is a good thing for America that we could elect a black man. He is facing daunting tasks as soon as he takes office. The Dems are pitching a trillion dollar stimulus package, on top of the “bailout” money already spent or pledged. I think everyone must be asking “where is the money going to come from?” More debt of course. We are already up to our neck in debt, and this might just sink us. Think of the burden we are leaving for our children and grandchildren, and long after those generations. How long do you think the foreign investors like China are going to buy our debt? When are they going to doubt that we can pay it back. We are a debtor nation, and it is just going to get worse. China currently hold a large part of our debt. Do you really think they are going to be our friends long term? They are and will be our competitor, and if it makes sense for them to play games with the debt, they will. We are in a very scary situation, and I don’t think anyone knows the way out. I know I don’t.
One thing which will help is getting out of Iraq, and plugging that huge leak in our budget. We are going to have to deal with Iran some day, but it will have to be done more efficiently. And maybe Israel will take care of some of that problem for us. It will be interesting to see how they fare in the invasion of Gaza. If it turns out like the Lebanon fiasco, it will be extremely damaging to the Israeli image and position vis a vis the Arab community. They will be seen as weak, and vulnerable to attack. Iran might just take advantage of the opportunity.
